The latest issue of today is about what they call the Google’s baby. Google announced their new phone which is called the Google Nexus One.

Nexus One is a smart phone from Google that uses the Android Open Source mobile Opening System (Android 2.1). The 2.1 firmware version of the Android OS adds a few aesthetics changes, such as “Live Wallpapers”, which are animated in the background and react to different user inputs. It is manufactured by Taiwan’s HTC Corporation, and was released on January 5, 2010. This phone is sold through Google website, at a price of $529 unlocked. It is not restricted to any particular mobile network provider and subsidized into $179 when purchased with a T-Mobile two year contract. This $179 T-Mobile price is only for individuals who are not currently under contract with T-Mobile. If one currently has T-Mobile contract, the price of the phone rises to $279.99.

The Nexus One trademark application was filed by Google Inc. on December 10, 2009 in International Trademark Class 9 for “Computer Software Products & Electrical & Scientific Products” with description of “Mobile phones”.

This device has a number of notable software features that make the phone a pleasure to use.

Features of the phone include the ability to transcribe voice to text, noise canceling dual microphones, and voice direction while driving.

The Nexus One has access to more than 20,000 applications through the Android Market. The list of applications installed on the phone can be access by pressing a single button that replaces the “Application Drawer”. The thumbnail list can be scrolled up and down and as it’s scrolled the application scroll up into a 3D cube instead of disappearing from the screen. The screen bounces of similarly to the iPhone functionality.

The Media Gallery of the phone provides several features that allows the user to brows, edit and share photos and videos on the phone. The Nexus One has a 3.7 inch capacitive touch screen capable of handling multi-touch gestures. It consists of illuminated trackball which is used to emit different color of light based on the type of notification being received. The phone has a second microphone on the back that monitors inbound noise and automatically cancels it out during phone conversation. It is provided by a 4-conductor TRRS style 3.5 mm stereo head set jack. It adds microphone function to the stereo earphones. It has a snapdragon processor that allow for many advanced capabilities including 720p video playback. There is a built in hardware decoding and is capable of playing MP3, AAC+, Ogg Vorbis, WAV, and MIDI audio, and it can display the JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP image formats. It has a micro USB port instead of the common mini-USB port, has a 4GB storage capacity but can be expandable into 32GB by the use of micro SD card and has 250hr battery life in a standby mode.

The multi-touch experience of the Nexus One is similar to that of other multi-touch enabled smart phones (iPhone, Palm Pre, etc.). Nexus One has also become the first smart phone to beat the iPhone 3Gs in CNET’s comparison show.

The Nexus One is thinner and lighter compared to the iPhone 3Gs and can be easily synchronize with all Google applications, such as G-mail, Google contacts and calendar.

Answer: Sadly, they would charge you a termination fee on the line your dropping. That’s the reason I left them.

Question: Can you disable internet data access on Android phones?
I plan to buy an Android phone (probably the Nexus One). However, I don’t have a data plan. Can I simply disable the internet access or force it to only connect w/ WiFi? I don’t want to get a big phone bill because I didn’t realize it was pinging some web site on its own.

Answer: Well, the easy way to deal with the data plan issue is to get a plan with unlimited data. I have a Nexus One (just got it yesterday, in fact) to replace my G1. We also have two myTouch 3gs on the plan. We have unlimited data, talk and text. Only way to go. if you get the T-Mobile version of the phone, sign up for one of the Even More Plus plans. No contract and you can get various levels of minutes with unlimited text and data.

However, if you don’t have a data plan, you can use wireless. You just turn on the wi-fi capability of the phone. It will even give you an on-screen notification if there’s an available network.

Now, here’s a warning: if you buy an Android phone from a carrier on a contract, they will make you get a data plan. With the Nexus, if you buy it at full price, you can use it any way you like.

As far as “pinging,” all cellphones send some kind of signal out, mostly to find a tower signal. The Android phones don’t send anything out more than any other phone. And with an unlimited data plan, it won’t matter.

Answer: There hasn’t been any plans to bring it to Verizon Wireless at all yet. Only networks it will be on are T-Mobile and Sprint for now. They’re in the talks with AT&T but not Verizon Wireless.

I would say 100% iPhone, but I am sure there are some google fans out there who would disagree. iPhone offers a bid app store, bigger than any other smart phone and this is a big selling point, but if your not interesting in downloading extra apps then that wont matter.

Nexus One is cheaper, and newer than the iPhone, which can be both good and bad, whilst it may have some newer hardware and software, there will be less available in terms of extras as they will only just be starting to develop them.

If you can wait there is rumoured to be the next generation iPhone due this year, which has so far seen a new model every year for the last 3 years.

Question: Unlocked vs locked nexus one?
I don’t know much about unlocked and locked phones, but I think its something like an unlocked phone can use different cell services, while the locked can’t. I’m on the internet looking at cell phones and I see that the nexus one is only $199. wow! that’s cheaper than I thought. Then I click on it and it says its like $500 or something for the unlocked one. What happened to the $199?? Can you even buy it locked (I didn’t see anything that said you could), and if so is it even worth it to spend $300 extra to have it unlocked?

Answer: The main difference is that locked, you get discount because you have to sign a 2 year contract with Tmobile, so its $199 plus a two year contract, and the phone will only work on tmobile network. The reason it is $199 is because over the course of 2 years you end up paying full price for the phone. Its what they call subsidizing the phone. Tmobile will pick up the $300 tap if you promise to stick with them for 2 years.

Unlock means that you can buy the phone for $500 without signing a 2 year contract and use it with your existing tmobile service or ATT since it will take either sim.

If you plan to be with tmobile 2 years or longer anyways, then you should get the locked phone because you get a discount.

Question: Comparing two phones?
Which one is better over all the Nexus One or the Cliq? I can’t decide which one to get, I have the G1 and I love my phone but it’s time to get a new one.

Answer: Well overall it depends. It depends mainly on if you want Motoblur or not.

If Motoblur wasn’t on the Cliq, Spec-wise the Nexus One is a better phone since it’s significantly faster (iPhone 3G > 3GS faster), has a better camera, slimmer, looks a lot better, and it’s just a really sexy phone. It’s not bulky like the other Android phones (Droid, G1, etc.).

But the Motorola Cliq has a slide-out physical keyboard which can be useful at times but getting used to a on-screen keyboard wouldn’t be so hard especially since you have had the G1. The Cliq is a bit fatter, but it does look like it’s just a bit fat.

Both use Android OS so you won’t be missing on anything except for the fact the Cliq has Motoblur that’s the only thing. Motoblur is a interface that lets you view everything on the home screen. Basically notifications like Facebook notifications, Myspace, Messages, Appointments, etc. in an organized screen. Notified in real-time. But you can add more. It’s basically widgets on screen like in Windows Vista and 7 except for social networking and leaned more toward personal use.

Both have a microSD slot.

Another thing you have to worry about is the substitution of knock off parts in your Iphone. Unless you know who you are dealing with, you could be ripped off.

Internet censorship laws do exist in China for a variety of reasons. Gmail has been blocked a couple of times, but neither time was for extended periods of time. Foreign social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Blogspot) are all blocked. Searches for sensitive materials on political or religious items will result in blocked sites as well.

Answer: You should read the fine print on calling cards because they may all be different but as far as I know, usually the answer is yes and no. Answer: I have a Nexus and a T-Mobile plan. There is nothing wrong with the quality of the 3G signal on T-Mobile’s network. Like any other carrier (yes, including Verizon), the quality of the signal is going to depend on where you are and other factors. I can tell you for a fact that T-Mo is already rolling out their HDSPA network in some areas, and it’s incredible.

There’s also a reason why you never hear Verizon, Sprint or AT&T compare their networks to T-Mobile’s in their ads. Every wonder about that? I travel extensively between Washington DC, New York and Jacksonville, Florida. I get a great 3G signal everywhere I go.

Ask anyone who lives in the New York City area and uses an iPhone on AT&Ts network what their service is like. Biggest city in the world, and their signal quality is abysmal.

The other thing you need to remember is that the plans being offered by the carriers with the Nexus under a contract are kind of limited. I don’t know what Verizon is going to offer (and AT&T is offering no subsidy or contact tie-in with the Nexus for their network). I have a T-Mo no-contract unlimited family plan, and after running the numbers, it’s the cheapest way to go. I already had the plan, so I just dropped the SIM in.

I’d keep it.

I am with Fido and I guess the previous owner was with Rogers.

Answer: There is nothing wrong with your iPhone. You are simply inserting an SIM from a different phone company that the iPhone was previously connected to. Phone companies normally lock their cellphones, not just iPhones to their SIM card system. That is why any other SIM that is inserted to the phone comes out with an invalid note. The only way you can make it work with your SIM card is to have it unlocked.

Question: How much stores charge to unlock my iPhone?
I cannot unlock it myself, tried many different ways. Does anyone know how much I can be charged to unlock it if I take it to a store?

Answer: It’s going to have to be an independent store. Official stores won’t do that. I’d expect anywhere from $20 to $50. If it’s an iPhone 3Gs on 3.1.3. firmware it cannot be unlocked at this time.

I got an unlocked iPhone 3gs for my 18th birthday and I took it to Best Buy to get Ghost Armor on it, and the guy at Best Buy said I needed to turn the phone off so I did and when I turned it back on it was on the screen with an iTunes logo and usb cable. Answer: Sometimes my phone does this when it needs to be charged. Plug it into the wall and let it charge and it should automatically boot up.

If by “unlocked” you mean you were given an iphone to use on another service or that it’s “jailbroken”, the phone may be worthless and permanently damaged. They are not made to be screwed with and sometimes are ruined by people messing with them. They’re essentially mini computers and are very sensitive.

Or does AT&T know you are using the phone on their network? If you are using it and getting around paying the data plan, they may have caught on. When you make phone calls and AT&T sees your minutes usage, they see the special ID number emitted by your phone (all phones emit this, similar to a computer’s IP address). All Iphones give off a unique ID number but they all begin with the same 3 digits. They see this and know you are using an iphone, and will deactiviate your service until you go in and ask them why your phone won’t work, and then they tell you that you must pay the data fee.

Just a couple scenarios here. You’ll have to test out each one.

Answer: Well that answer really depends on what part of Afghanistan he’s going to be in. My husband’s base does not have internet in the barracks and he has to walk a quarter mile to the MWR and wait in line to use the internet (that cuts out every 10 minutes). So for him, the magic jack would be absolutely useless, as it needs an internet connection, which he has none. I’d say don’t jump into buying any fancy tools just yet.

The avenues we use to communicate are facebook chat, skype, and then if all else fails yahoo email chat. He downloaded the messenger program on his laptop, but seeing as there’s no wi-fi and he has to use the MWR computers, they don’t have messenger programs so we just use the ghetto one that comes with email (it’s probably the most reliable out of the 3 of them, because skype and fb both have problems sometimes)

Letters take 2-3 weeks (which is strangely twice as long as care packages), and I haven’t received any phone calls as the phones there are ridiculously unreliable.

Answer: You hook it up with a standard phone line cord just like you would a regular phone and setup the fax machine like you normally would for a regular phone line, however MagicJack does not guarantee fax compatibility. Fax machines require pretty good line signals to work properly. Many people have had good luck with it and others have had problems. You can only try and see what happens.

Answer: That’s because it’s NOT a phone company. It’s a phone “forwarder”. Your local cable or Internet company probably offer the same service by a different name. I know AT&T and Comcast in my area offer “VOIP” service routed through regular phone. And you can always order Vonage or one of its competitors.

REMEMBER, if your Internet goes down, your phone goes dead. If you can live with that, it’s not too bad.

Question: My magicjack was working, but after I ran Spybot check, it stopped. It says I am not connected to the Internet?

Answer: Spybot deleted something that MagicJack needed. MagicJack installs a process that can be mistaken for spyware. If you can undo the Spybot uninstall try that first. If not reinstall the MagicJack software. When you run Spybot again, look for the MagicJack process it wants to delete and whitelist it.

Question: Why does my MagicJack not work?
I am trying to run a fax machine with MagicJack. I did not have problems until now. When I try to send a fax, MagicJack says there is not enough memory, and then freezes. I tried freeing up memory and it still won’t work. Is there something I need to do?

Answer: First, turn off error correction on your fax machine or program. Then, set the fax machine or program to use the slowest speed available. The slowest speed will ensure a fax goes through. You may increase later to find the highest speed at which a fax can be received. It’s generally quite tricky to get a fax machine working with MagicJack (and often unstable) due to the signal compression of VOIP services.

Let’s face it…we all make calls one of two ways for the most part. We use our land line service, or we use our cell phone. Since most wireless cellular carriers have been reluctant to allow (as in block) VoIP traffic over their data networks, the usefulness of VoIP on a cell phone has been limited to those times when you have access to a Wi-Fi connection. This is fine if you’re at home or in the office, but doesn’t work when you’re out and about, unless you stop by Starbucks or McDonalds. Because of this, VoIP on a cell phone has been a hard sell, reserved more for techies than mainstream.

Now, with the allowance of VoIP over 3G, VoIP for cell phones becomes much more attractive, as you can make VoIP calls anywhere AT&T has 3G coverage, while still utilizing VoIP over Wi-Fi in areas with no 3G. While VoIP is not likely to work over AT&Ts 2G Edge networks due to speed and latency, 3G coverage areas still encompass a vast amount of potential VoIP customers. Consider a single, heavy user with an iPhone. Let’s say they have the Nationwide Unlimited Plan for calling minutes at $69.99/mth. If they had a low cost VoIP plan with unlimited minutes, they could reduce that to the Nationwide 450 plan at $39.99/mth. While that’s a savings of $30 per month, they would need to sign up for a VoIP provider that would allow use of VoIP on their phone. Just adding the ability to call Canada with AT&Ts service will add $20 to $60/mth to your bill. Having a VoIP plan also gives you the ability to use your cell phone for low rate international VoIP calls. If you’re already using VoIP with a landline to make international calls, chances are, you’re ready to transfer that technology over to your iPhone.

Many cell phone users have never considered using VoIP instead of wireless minutes. I have a vonage type VOIP phone, it has an American number. If my American friend calls this local American number, which is forwarded to my cell phone (Canadian) would they get charged for LD? They technically are dialing a local number to them, so I was confused.

Answer: Since the number that’s being called is the local number, the caller won’t get charged for the international call. Since the forwarding (VOIP) number is the one calling your Canadian cell phone, you will be charged applicable rates for international calling on your VOIP service.

Question: Charter Telephone (VOIP) SIP Access?
Does anyone happen to know the charter telephone VOIP SIP access points? I am trying to use the VOIP features on my cell phone and know that this has to be at least somewhat plausible.

Answer: I don’t know about Charter but I use SIP service from uVOIPit to make Pc to phone calls. Their rates are good and I get good connections, maybe this can help you?

Question: Is there a US prepaid phone service that will work in Italy?
I just moved to Italy for the next two years. I’ve had the same AT&T phone number for almost 10 years back home in the USA and would like to keep it. However, I do not want to pay AT&T a huge monthly service fee the whole time I’m here, but I would like to still get text messages and emergency calls from family and friends so disabling the number completely is NOT an option. My current plan does work in Italy since I have my sim in a quad band phone, but again I don’t want to waste my money for talk time I’m not using. Ideally, I’m looking for a prepaid cell phone service that will let me port my current US phone number, will work in Italy, and won’t charge me a monthly fee. If no cell phone options are available I’d like to use a VOIP service that offers the same, but don’t know which allow you to port your number to their service, then back to a cell phone when my stint in Italy is over.

Answer: That is impossible, especially on prepaid. But you can use Vonage, a VOIP service. You can use that number and your family will be able to call you. I’m sure you can disable this and have your number back when your done.

Question: Any free voip providers?
I just moved to a new city and would like to get a local area code phone number, but I cannot change my current cell phone number either. I’d like a free solution if possible. Ideally, I would have a local phone number with the ability to forward the calls to my cell phone so I only have one device to worry about.

Answer: There are free VoIP providers but I am still looking for a free DID provider. Google voice is one of the few choices for you to get a free number in whatever area code you choose. Voipbuster provides free VoIP service to calls to something like 60 countries but does not give you a free DID.

Question: Free VOIP calling to cell phone?
I just started a study abroad program in the UK from the US. I have a UK cell phone, but every time my fiance tries to skype me, it costs him 25 cents. Is there a program out there that allow him to call me for free (or cheaper), or that will take a UK or US number and forward to my cell, or call my directly from the internet for free? If he was calling a US number or UK land line, he’d only pay 2 cents a minute, and I don’t think its fair to increase the price for a cell phone.

Answer: Depending on the type of phone you have, you may be able to install Skype on it and just use Skype to Skype free calls.

If you want to invest money rather than time setting this up visit a “3 Store” in your local high street, they offer phones with unlimited Skype usage provided you top them up regularly. I believe the 3 Skype is also implemented at the cells rather than on the phone so you get a better connection than other solutions.

Question: With a home phone line, is it possible to choose my area code like you can with cell phones?
I am interested in getting a home phone line since my cell phone does not get reception in my apartment. I live in Los Angeles, but would like a NYC area code for work reasons. Is this at all possible? Perhaps with VoIP, or some other new type of phone service?

Answer: Your home phone from the land line company is based on where you live. You can order a VoIP number from just about anybody with NYC dial tone. I would imagine anyone from MagicJack to Vonage would have a Manhattan number.

For a couple of bucks extra, you could have more than one number terminating on your VoIP line, like NY and LA. You could also just sign up for a google voice number.

Question: Is it dishonest or illegal to use an unlocked cell phone?
I’m debating whether or not to buy an unlocked cell phone that supports Wireless access. Assuming I buy a phone with wifi access, I hope to use VoIP to use the wifi to make unlimited calls and access the internet without a cell plan. I’ve been told this is “dishonest” because I’d be making calls over public and unsecured wireless networks instead of paying for a cell plan. In my opinion, I am just making use of technology that is available.

Answer: The United States Supreme Court ruled that anyone can unlock their phone, so it is not illegal. You will still need a calling plan. Unlocking a phone allows you to use different carriers with the same technology. If it was totally free, everyone would use an unlocked phone.

Question: Nokia n810 voip?
Alright, so I’m sick of paying 50 bucks a month for using my cell phone. I was looking at some youtube videos and for example the ipod touch is wifi enabled so when you download this app you can make free or extremely cheap calls to people on other phones/ but the ipod touch doesn’t have a built in mic so walking around wifi areas with earphones talking to them is ridiculous. I heard the nokia n810 the internet tablet can pretty much do everything I just mentioned, is this true? Can it download apps? Have a different OS?

Answer: It has wifi phone capabilities through Gizmo or Skype. I use Skype (about $7/mo with SkypeIn and SkypeOut) on mine all the time since I have wifi almost everywhere I go anyway. It has been very reliable. I use both the mic/speakers, or the earbuds with the built-in mic. The o/s is maemo. It can d/l apps for itself. I use my N810 for many many things, Skype is just one of them.

Answer: Yes, it is called “Text to Land line” (regardless if the number you are trying to push the text to is VOIP it will still work.) I know Sprint does it, so do others.

A couple of years ago, I worked for a Voip company as a Tech Support. People were saying that in the very near future, all will be going to Voip mode/ style. VOIP as an enterprise communications vehicle in large and small companies is getting pretty attractive. Consider that when you pay for a phone line, you are paying for a 7×24.365 facility that just sits there until someone calls you or you decide to call out for a pizza or something. With VOIP, you get ‘convergence’ which, in part, means that by combining services on a single circuit, you get better use out of that circuit, so you waste less money. Question: Is a call from my voip phone to a cell phone (same area code) out of state considered long distance?
My husband will be out of state with his cell phone that has the same area code. I have Voicepulse if that matters.

Answer: With VoIP, across the street or across the country… it’s all the same. You should be able to use your free 200 minutes for your calls. From then on, it just depends on their standard per/minute rates. Again, per/minute rates usually don’t care if across the street or across the nation… it’s usuall the same….. at least with the VoIP services I use.

Question: Having problems with receiving text messages on my cell phone when they’re sent from a Voip account?
Can anybody help me out please? My bf who lives in the UK used to text me on my cell phone (I live in Turkey) using his voip account; I recently got a new cell number (same provider) and since then his texts sent via voip cannot reach me anymore.

Answer: If your phone doesn’t support Voice-over IP, it can’t send or receive any file of that type. I recommend that he sends it in a different format.
